Day 2 of Background Basics: Diagonals and Diagonal Additions

I've got one card today for you using my two new stamp sets being released this month at Papertrey Ink. I firmly believe in just goofing around and playing when it comes to stamps. Breakthroughs happen. Some of my favorite cards have come about this way just because I was unafraid to waste a little paper and ink. You've sometimes have to play open ended with your supplies. No expectations.

This card is a result of doing just that yesterday while down in the kitchen supervising a few kids. Try it...I promise you'll come up with something wonderful.

So here was my breakthrough. I took the herringbone pattern strip from Background Basics: Diagonals and first stamped it repeatedly to form a large pattern block on white cardstock in Hawaiian Shores ink. I then took my acrylic block and turned it (and the stamp that was still stuck on it) 180 degrees so it was now upside down. I inked it up with Pure Poppy ink and stamped directly over my Hawaiian Shores pattern. I got this intriguing look that reminds me of old school telephone cords lined up next to each other. A third color was made where the Pure Poppy and Hawaiian Shores inks overlapped.

I trimmed it down to a panel I could use on an A2 card front. Yesterday I said that the Diagonal Additions set  has the individual elements of the patterns from BB: Diagonals ($5!!!...good investment for the number of options you get). I took the individual solid herringbone elements and stamped them over my design at random places using True Black ink.

Also included in Diagonal Additions are four sentiment blocks that work with the herringbone pattern in BB: Diagonals. You can add a little message to your pattern. Here I took the Diagonal Dies and stamped the "love u" block in True Black ink and glued it onto my patterned block. I choose to do it this way so the text would be completely white. I didn't want it to be difficult to read, which it would have been if I had stamped directly on my red and blue pattern like I had done with the solid blocks.

Hope ya'll have a nice weekend. Check back to Nichole's blog to see who has additional projects today. It's a bit of an unusual release...not all of us have the product due to shipping issues. And I'm not sure of today's status!  Making the best of it:). Thanks for understanding.

  1. Okay! It took me a full 24 hours to "get it" but now I am sold on your new sets Erin! I really admire how much thought you give your stamp designs and how you pay attention to the little details. Those little word blocks are the icing on the cake for me! Great card design using the block in two directions in two of my favorite colors!

  6. Beautiful color choices and really stand out with your new diagonals. You had me confused over the sentiment but then realized the words are line images and you stamp the surrounding border to get the white letters & black border. I'm a little slow sometimes. Great job with this release, Erin!
