Valentine's Day #1

With all of the hustle and bustle of deadlines for the PTI Anniversary every year, I never manage to get any of the fun Valentine's Day stuff up in time for it to be of any help to anyone. Of course, I could do it all ahead of time, but I'm a bit of a procrastinator (if my blog name didn't clue you in) and V-Day projects are usually done on the 13th every year. So, how about three days of Valentine's projects now? I think any one of them you could totally change the theme and use them at any time.

First up, a red lunch box. We were asked about our five favorite products from PTI , I forgot about the self adhesive sheets. Duh!  I use these things all the time! I cut one down to fit the front of the lunchbox. BB: Medallion is quite possibly my favorite background set ever. Very easy to line up and love the two color capabilities. Things are rounded out with Clear & Simple Stamps Heart Shapes Dies and stamps (I really feel in love with the number of sizes and the shape of that heart), a sentiment from Tremendous Treats Valentine's, and my niece's name spelled out with the Block Alphabet dies. Inside the little lunch box was a bunch of Hello Kitty stuff that I found at the dollar section at Michael's. What did people do for fun, cheap little kid gifts before dollar items became in vogue? Seriously.

February 2012 Release Projects

And so, it all comes to an end. After 11 days of non-stop PTI fun, we're calling it a wrap on the 5th Anniversary activities. We had fun, got creative, and now we're going to go fold the piles of neglected clothes! But before we all do that, we're here one last time to show you the rest of the release projects. Here are mine.

Maile's Beautiful Butterflies. I created a bride out of a cut Parisian Doilie and a groom out of Smokey Shadow cardstock to go with the sentiment. I found that floral pips (you get them cheap in the floral depart of the craft stores) make excellent antennae for these die cut butterflies.  Lemon Tart, Harvest Gold, Aqua Mist, and Hawaiian Shores strips pop against a Soft Stone base.

Frame Outs #1 gets some help from Frilly Flowers and Think Big Favorites #13. Put the new Aqua Mist patterned paper to good use.

Frilly Flowers and Simply You together on a Vintage Cream card base. Loving the softer colors of ink now available--that's Fine Linen with BB: Text Style giving things a little personality in the background.

Lovely Leaves used as vertical borders. Aqua Mist felt butterfly matches gingham Aqua Mist patterned paper.

Heart-2-Heart #1. I think I'm going to really like this series! I made these cards for Hank's pre-school teachers as V-Day gifts. BB: Retro, Sign Language, and Sweet Love get dusted off and put to use. Check out that zipper die and the arrow...

...they reveal a Dunkin Donut gift card. There's room for one underneath the zipper panel if you use very think strips of Scor-Tape to adhere it. I just made sure to reference there was a "surprise underneath the pink zipper" in my handwritten note on the inside of the card. Don't want that getting tossed!

Anniversary Set: Pretty Peonies

For all you avid fans of Rosie Posie, this year's anniversary set is going to tickle your fancy. The stenciled two-step posies have the same feel as Rosie Posie, but have a style all their own. Here's what I created using it this afternoon:

Busted out of my comfort zone and used a new color combination--Scarlet Jewel, Simply Chartreuse, Canyon Clay, Dark Chocolate, and Kraft. Seriously dig the two step posies and matching peonies sketch image on a smaller scale. Makes it easy to reinforce the theme.

Movers & Shakers

At long last, time to satisfy that anticipation I know you all have had over Simply You, Movers & Shakers Sentiments, and the complete collection of Mover and Shaker dies. Oh lordy bees, prepare to be amazed as you blog hop along the PTI blogs this morning checking out the wide variety of ways you can now make interactive cards and the stylish sentiments that go along with them. When I opened up the preview post three weeks ago, I was literally rendered speechless. It was just so mind boggling that we were going to be able to easily make these engineered cards. I was ready to jump right in as soon as I could.

I picked the longer of the two slider sets to work with. They are nice to use on a vertical A2 card. Let me show you my two concepts together--one using an old stamp set and another using the new sentiments from Movers & Shaker sentiments. The white panels on the front slide up to reveal a sentiment underneath.

First one to explore in detail is the card using "Wise Owl". I've pulled that out twice in the last week, amazingly enough. How about some dies Nichole:)?


Hank was invited to a birthday party this past weekend that had a bird theme. I managed to wiggle out of attending (Hun-ey I have so much work to do for PTI! You take him). I couldn't contain my giggles when the hubby walked in the door from the 4 year old's party and immediately got himself a beer and needed a little quiet time to decompress. When he was capable of coherent speech again, I learned that there was a nature program featuring a live owl. I felt like I had a slam dunk with the card at that point. YES!  Score one for Hank's Mama. 

Falling Leaves, Background Basics: Retro (another one you'll see more of this release from me), and the Woodgrain Impression Plate round out my owl theme. Notice how nicely a white gel pen accents the design?

Now, I did something interesting with both cards that you might not realize until you either get the dies or see the short slider die set featured. The top panel is supposed to fold in the middle and the image is suppose to flip up over the fold. I just went again and cut full size panel without scoring the fold. When pulled, the full panel goes up. Just gives you a little more room to stamp. 

Here's the slider in the pulled position. Beneath is another "owl" message. Perfect for kids. And see how that front panel doesn't bend, but rather the panel underneath? I know, it's a bit confusing. But once you get these dies in your hot little hands, they are really very easy to figure out. 

Onto my Mover & Shakers Sentiments card. I was particularly drawn to the sentiment about rainbows. I can see myself sending an encouraging little message like this in the mail. Scattered Showers teams up brilliantly. This time I adhered some Bitty Dot Orange Zest Ribbon with Scor-Tape to the pull for a little extra somethin' somethin.

My favorite part is the surprise when the slider is pulled. A brilliant rainbow (I'm in heaven with new inks!) and a reminder that something wonderful is just around the corner. I'm going to wear this sentiment out. Wouldn't it put a huge smile on your face if you got it in the mail during a particularly tough time in your life?

So are you excited or what? Brilliant concept, awesome stamps. Raises the bar yet again. Looking forward to seeing the other types of interactive cards from the girls in the morning. I have barely scratched the surface with possibilities here today.

Sweet Spring

It might be blowing and blustering outside right now, but I keep telling myself that spring is right around the corner. I am always counting down the days in February. I've noticed the days getting a little longer already and bulbs punching through the ground. Just a few more weeks. Surely, I can hack just a few more weeks, right?

Well, Papertrey Ink is getting me in the mood for soft breezes, egg hunts, and short sleeve tops with two fabulous spring releases--Sweet Spring and Scrambled Eggs (great name btw). I fell in love with both immediately. Especially the bunny with the ears! So cute.

But a little business first, if you are playing along with Nichole's blog with the egg scavenger hunt, here's my photo for that. You can officially cross that off your list. You spotted it!

As for my project, here is a clear, logo-free view of the card.

Now you might have caught my Make It Monday video this week about stamping on both sides of your die cut. The bunny ears are perfect for this technique! He looks so cute with an ear folded down. Buttons serve as Easter eggs in a Martha Steward border punched grass landscape. The casual little sentiment is stamped in Smokey Shadow.

It is always fun to make a coordinating project to go with a card. And I'm particularly fond of taking a $1 Spot or Dollar Store item and turning it into something special. I found the plastic tote at Target this week for a buck. They are still available, so hustle on out to the red bulls eye if you want to make this basket yourself. I used Soft Blush, Spring Rain, Lemon Tart, and Lavender Moon ribbon to weave in and out of the holes to give it a big dollar look, in no time at all. So very easy too by the way.

Grass, eggs, and the bunny are repeated on the front of the basket. The Sweet Spring label and sentiment add a little originality to the item, marrying well with those elements that match the card. I'm so happy to be getting some of the softer shades of ink in the mail. It's been so long since I've been able to use Spring Rain ink.

Introducing Lighten Up

I always love popping in during the countdown and introducing a new set to ya'll. Today I'm here for Day 2 of the countdown (and the 7th day of the anniversary...can you believe it?) with some projects using Melissa Bickford's new set "Lighten Up". I had to laugh when I saw the preview and my subsequent assignment. Have you been to Target lately? I've been snapping up fun patterned lamp shades to cheer up the house since mid-January. This is the perfect stamp set for me right now.

First card is a row of lamps on a table. I liberally used the Pacific Vineyard patterned paper pack. Both shapes of the lamp shades and all three lamps are here on the card. Just to give you a good idea. The lamps are heat embossed in clear on Dark Chocolate cardstock. I thought it would be fun to add pulls on a few lamps with a hand drawn line and a silver brand.

Now, I always like to do something different with my sets and so for my second card, I made those lamp shades into hanging pendants. The outlined shade image was stamped on patterned paper I made with the new Background Basics: Medallions. I masked off below the middle lamp and used an Tim Holtz ink applicator tool  with Summer Sunrise ink to make it look like the light is on and spotlighting the word "you" from the new "Simply You" set. I selectively inked the rest of the sentiment from "Lighten Up", leaving off the word "you" at the beginning to make it work.

And lastly, I envisioned a little tableau on a dresser. The dresser was a cinch to make using the negative space left over by die cutting Fillable Frames #4 die and using Angled Labels for drawers. Same goes for the curtain. This is a fancy smancy lamp, so I used my Copics to give it some trim. A lighter color Copic was used on the inside rim, because you would be able to see through it a little bit in real life.

Since the sentiment was left off the front, you can find it inside. Used Fillable Frames #4 (die and stamp set) again to echo the lines on the front.

Papertrey & Pinterest

Pinterest, Pinterest, Pinterest...how I love thee? To the depth of my soul, my computer time belongs to you. And it seems I am not the only one. I saw an article on CNN Online on you (a sign that you've hit it big time) and my husband comes home everyday with stories from people who are talking about you. In a tax office, so something good must be going on to be a topic of conversation in that harsh environment.

And now, Papertrey has opened an account and has started uploading project files into organized boards. Finding inspiration has never been easier. Whether you are going right from the source (the Papertrey Boards) or working off an inspiration piece, Pinterest means your crafting life has never been easier or more fun. Let me show you what I mean.

I had two pins on different boards that I used for our inspiration challenge.

The first was color (btw, I'm dying to try macaroons like this).

And the second was design.

And this is what I came up with. All the fun of creating, none of the frustration that comes with hitting the brick wall of the uninspired. Heck, I came up with this at 10 PM after a day with the kids. I put on a little Netflix, shut the door to the world, and had some time to myself. It was wonderful!

Why do I really like Pinterest? It is a way to live an inspired life.  I resisted it for a long time, despite the rave reviews and over the top gushing of my friends. I finally just jumped in feet first and life around the Lincoln household has not been the same since. I heard Pinterest described as "fantasy football for chicks". I think that pretty much nails it. So much inspiration in one place. And I'm not just talking about papercrafting. It's a lifestyle makeover. I cook off Pinterest, I decorate off Pinterest, I organize purchases on Pinterest. But probably my absolute favorite is my board of fun kid ideas. This time of year, I'm at my wit's end for entertaining the kids inside. Pinterest to the rescue. The most frequently heard request from Hank around here is, "Can I do a project?" He just doesn't realize that all my project ideas come off Pinterest! We've got very happy and creative kids and a chilled and relaxed mama around these here parts as we "project" the winter away. Hank will tell you he loves his mama "because she does art projects all the time with me." Melt my heart, you know!  I like to think I'm a creative person and the gift of creative play is one I love passing on to my children--I've got Pinterest to thank for that on an almost daily basis.

Light board play. Although I can't recommend the Squishy Baff. I'm very mess tolerant and this stuff had me running for the hills. Maybe outside this summer I can use up the rest. 

And toddler finger painting. I should have given her yellow paint as well so she looked more like a hot dog than a crime scene from Dexter. Side note: I tossed her in the shower with her brother. Gave him a wash cloth and a bar of soap. She came out clean. I didn't have to do a thing! YAY!

My Favorite Color Combination

You've might have noticed already that I have a thing for Pure Poppy (red) and Aqua Mist (light turquoise). Well, primary colors are a big draw for me in general. All my downstairs drapes are red and I've been accenting with blue. Made a necklace yesterday with the colors of red, yellow, green, blue, and brown. It's really going to pop against a pretty grey sweater. And I love M&M's for reasons other than their taste. They just look so cheery in my gumball machine. So is it any wonder when asked for my favorite PTI color combination, I come up with this:

Just makes me happy to look at it.

Here's my card featuring these colors. I like to sometimes do trial runs of my new stamps when they come in the mail. For this particular month, this was the first card I made and never shared. It got sent to a friend, however, so all is good. Always makes me feel good when I actually slap a stamp on something and send it on it's way.

Designing with Papertrey

Ah well...what do I say? A secret desire is secret no longer. If you would have told me I would be designing stamps for PTI back when I was obsessively stalking Nichole and all the DT's blogs back between 2008-2010, I would have called you a liar and thrown you right out my front door. Just goes to show you that if you can dream it, you can do it.

And so, without further ado, I'm going to be designing products under the logo of Chapter 3 Stamps. I am an avid reader since I was wee bitty. And feel like this is the third stage in my papercrafting career after designing pages for scrapbook magazines and working on the social media side of things. Designing product is the third thing I'll be doing.

I started working on stamp sets rather late in the season and so I won't be having a huge showing in 2012. Just a few little things toward the end of the year. I'm not new to computer illustrating. Back in my college days when I was a bored intern working for a veterinary pathologist, I created a summer project for myself that had me learning the ins and outs of Corel Draw. Keen on beefing up my extra curriculars, I created "Mickey: The Inside Story"  to teach post docs the anatomy of a mouse. I was all smug at the time, all of nineteen, thinking I knew more than these graduate students. Time has humbled me a bit. In the end, I got a nice little bonus, a leg up on my first job out of college, and a wee bit of notoriety in veterinary circles until something newer and more well done came along.  But, I never forgot how engrossed I was in the process that summer. I think it was far past time to revisit things and learn some new skills. Things have really changed in 15 years!

I Just Can't Help Myself

I've got quite a few irons in the fire this week and next between the anniversary activities, tax season, Valentine's Day, and Hank's 4th (!!!!!) birthday. I also have a belated homemade wedding gift that is finally and at last completely done. Huge thing to cross off my to-do list.  I want to get that in the mail this week too.

Of course, there needs to be a homemade card in there as well. Just whipped this up. I say that all cavalier, like I didn't sweat over it for 60 minutes when I should have been doing something else.  I'm super thrilled with how it turned out. Lots of soft colors and symbolism on it--the wedding date, the location, a jar of sand and shells. The bride and groom got married on the beach and used shells to pick up sand and pour it into a jar that they brought home during the ceremony.

It was a bit ridiculous the number of stamp sets I used here. If you got them, use them, I say. I always get a little alarmed when I see threads on the PTI forum talking about selling sets. You don't want to do that!!! They'll come in handy one day. Just think of them as building your collection. And then you can use a little bit of this one and a little bit of that one when creating cards. You just can't predict what you are going to need in the future, so keeps those treasures on a shelf for a rainy day.

Papertrey & My Favorite Things

How thick is the anticipation for the Papertrey Ink Anniversary events?!?!? Are you all pumped and ready for a fun-filled 9 days? Lots and lots of exciting things coming your way. And to kick it all off, the Design Team is featuring our favorite projects of the last year and talking about our five favorite products. Let's get started.

My favorite PTI project was not officially one for any countdown. It was inspired by this sticker envelope I made for the April release. Instead of Alpha-Block stamped stickers, I used the window envelope to house some homemade headbands. You can read the original blog post here. I've since gone on and made this little project three times. Anytime there's a new little girl in my acquaintance, you'll find me happily making headbands. The thing I love most about the whole gift is just how professional it looks. Of course, that's easy to do with Papertrey Ink. You almost have to try hard to make something turn out horrible, that's just how wonderful everything works together.

As for my favorite products (a hard thing to nail down, let me tell you), a little explanation:

1. Loopsy-Daisy Collection: I made a collection of Valentine's Day bows for gifts just recently. Topped with a button, they look adorable. My son Hank is equally enamored. He's been trying to steal them for his own "projects". Need to make him some of his own here soon. The kid's got good taste.

2. Wine Bottle Tag: Wine is a classy thing to give. And I like I can make it personal with a stamped tag. Gives me an excuse to both buy the wine and stamp--how can that be wrong?

3. Aqua Mist Cardstock:  Is there any color this doesn't go with? Like seriously. A surprising neutral. I think I'm on my third 50 pack of the stuff.

4. Vintage Labels: Got to include the dies here as well. You know if you are willing to buy something similar in a fancy tin container at a specialty boutique store, it's going to make an awesome stamp/die combo.  Absolutely timeless.

5. Friendship Jar: I had to pick one, so I went with the original, but the whole series is top shelf stellar. When making cards in my "off time", I often find myself reaching for this and it's buddies. Original, fresh, a world of possibilities. So very cute.

But most of all, my favorite thing is Papertrey Ink in general. I'm so very grateful to be a part of it each and every month. Nothing stokes my creative fire and spirit more than the inspiration from the other girls and the fabulous products that they make available to us. Absolute heaven.
